Tidio vs Help Scout: billed by conversation, or by person
OUR PICK
Our pick: Tidio — a real free tier, and a bill that grows with your customers rather than with your headcount, which is the cheaper direction for most small businesses.
Read from both pricing pages on 2026-08-27 with each billing switch clicked. Tidio Starter is €24.17 a month billed annually (€29 monthly) and carries 100 billable conversations regardless of how many staff use it. Help Scout Standard is $25 per user per month annually ($30 monthly), so the same five-person team is $125 a month before any volume. Tidio also publishes a standing free tier at €0; Help Scout's pricing page publishes none. For a small business where several people answer messages between other jobs, the per-seat model is the expensive one.
The other way: Pick Help Scout if you run a dedicated support team and volume is high. Its per-agent price is predictable in a way Tidio's is not: two of Tidio's four plans are 'Starts at' figures that rise with conversation volume, so the published €49.17 and €300 are floors rather than rates. Help Scout is also the more complete help desk on its own page — advanced SLA policies, round robin routing, secure customer portal, Salesforce, Jira and HubSpot integrations on Plus — and if five agents are handling thousands of conversations, a fixed $25 a head can easily beat a conversation meter.
How to read this page: every number below was read from the vendor’s own public pricing page on the date shown, and the pages are re-checked daily. Currencies differ because that is what each vendor showed an EU visitor. Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you subscribe through one we earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Per
our method, that never changes a number or a verdict. Source links always point to the vendor’s plain page.

The saving is exactly two months free on all three tiers — $25 against $30, $45 against $54, $75 against $90 — so 16.67%, which their label rounds down rather than up. AI is metered on top by outcome: AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution. Inboxes and sites are capped per tier and billed beyond it. Read in a browser on 2026-08-27 with both switch states visited.
What the record says
The unit is the whole story here, so start there. Help Scout's ladder is $25, $45 and $75 per user per month billed annually — Standard, Plus and Pro. Add a person and the bill goes up by that amount whether or not the volume changes. Tidio's ladder counts conversations instead: Starter is €24.17 a month with 100 billable conversations, Growth starts at €49.17 from 250. Add a person and nothing happens to the bill; add customers and it moves.
That produces two opposite failure modes. A five-person shop where everyone answers the occasional message pays $125 a month on Help Scout Standard and €24.17 on Tidio Starter — a difference of roughly five to one, for identical work. A single-person business fielding 400 conversations a month pays $25 on Help Scout and has already climbed past Tidio Starter's 100-conversation allowance into Growth territory. Neither model is more honest; they are priced for different shapes of business, and the crossover depends on your conversations-per-agent ratio rather than on either company's marketing.
The annual discounts are, unusually, identical and both accurately labelled. Tidio's switch says '2 MONTHS FREE' and delivers exactly that: €290.04 a year against €348 paid monthly, which is 16.65%. Help Scout's says '-16%' and delivers 16.67% — $300 against $360, $540 against $648, $900 against $1,080 — so it rounds the number down rather than up. After a run of vendors whose discount labels overstated their arithmetic, both of these check out.
AI is metered separately on both, in two different currencies of usage. Help Scout charges $0.75 per resolution for AI Answers — you pay when the bot actually closes something, which is at least an outcome you can audit. Tidio includes 50 Lyro AI Agent conversations on Starter, and the page describes that as a one-off allowance rather than a monthly one, so it is a sample rather than a running budget. Neither headline price includes meaningful AI capacity.
Help Scout's extras are the ones most likely to surprise you, because they are structural rather than optional. Inboxes are capped by tier — 2 on Standard, 5 on Plus, 10 on Pro — with additional inboxes at $10 a month each, and additional sites at $20. If you support three brands from one account, you are paying for inboxes on top of agents, and that cost scales with your business rather than your team.
Tidio's equivalent uncertainty is that half its ladder is not a fixed price at all. Growth is published as 'Starts at €49.17' and Plus as 'Starts at €300', both rising with conversation volume. We can tell you the floor and we cannot tell you the rate, because the page does not print one. For a site built on quoting exact numbers that is a real limitation, and it is worth saying plainly: if your volume is high, the only way to know what Tidio costs is to ask them.
On free access the two differ completely. Tidio publishes a standing free tier at €0 in the same table as its paid plans, plus a 7-day trial on the paid ones. Help Scout's pricing page publishes no free tier — the entry is a trial, and its top Pro tier does not even offer that, replacing 'Try for Free' with 'Book a Demo'. If you want to run a small volume of support at no cost indefinitely, only one of these two lets you.
One currency caveat that limits the headline comparison. Tidio returned euros to us and Help Scout returned dollars, from the same connection, both localising by visitor. We have not converted between them. The €24.17 against $25 comparison is directional rather than exact — but the structural point, that one bills per conversation and the other per person, holds in any currency and is the thing that will actually decide your bill.
Beyond the price tag
Conversations or agents — the crossover
Tidio Starter is €24.17/mo annually for 100 billable conversations, whatever the headcount. Help Scout Standard is $25 per user per month, whatever the volume. Five people at low volume: roughly $125 against €24.17. One person at 400 conversations: $25 against a climb into Tidio's Growth tier. Your conversations-per-agent ratio decides it.
Two annual discounts that are exactly what they say
Tidio's '2 MONTHS FREE' is exact: €290.04 a year against €348, or 16.65%. Help Scout's '-16%' is actually 16.67% on all three tiers — $300 vs $360, $540 vs $648, $900 vs $1,080 — so it rounds against itself. Both labels survive checking, which has not been true of every vendor we have read.
What the plan price does not cover
Help Scout: AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution, inboxes capped at 2/5/10 with more at $10 each, additional sites at $20. Tidio: 50 Lyro AI conversations on Starter described as a one-off, and two of its four plans published as 'Starts at' floors — €49.17 and €300 — that rise with volume rather than quoting a rate.
Questions people actually search
Which is cheaper, Tidio or Help Scout?
It depends entirely on how many people answer messages versus how many messages arrive. Tidio Starter is €24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations no matter how many staff use it. Help Scout Standard is $25 per user per month no matter the volume. A five-person team at low volume pays about five times more on Help Scout; a one-person business at high volume pays less.
Do either of them have a free plan?
Tidio does — a standing free tier listed at €0 in the same table as its paid plans, alongside a 7-day trial on the paid ones. Help Scout's pricing page publishes no free tier; the entry is a trial, and its top Pro tier replaces the trial button with Book a Demo.
Is the annual discount worth taking on either?
Both are exactly two months free and both label it accurately. Tidio says '2 MONTHS FREE' and charges €290.04 a year against €348 monthly. Help Scout says '-16%' and charges $300 against $360 on Standard, with the same 16.67% on Plus and Pro. Its label rounds down rather than up.
What does the AI cost?
Extra on both, measured differently. Help Scout bills AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution, so you pay per closed conversation. Tidio includes 50 Lyro AI Agent conversations on Starter, described on the page as a one-off allowance rather than a monthly one. Neither entry price includes an ongoing AI budget worth planning around.
Why can't you quote Tidio's higher plans exactly?
Because Tidio does not print a rate for them. Growth is published as 'Starts at €49.17' and Plus as 'Starts at €300', both rising with conversation volume. We can quote the floor and we will not invent the slope. If your volume is meaningful, the only reliable figure comes from asking Tidio directly.
THE VERDICT, ONE MORE TIME
Our pick: Tidio — a real free tier, and a bill that grows with your customers rather than with your headcount, which is the cheaper direction for most small businesses.
Every figure above was read from each vendor's own pricing page in a browser on 2026-08-27, with each billing switch clicked in both directions. Both pages open on their annual rate. Discount percentages are arithmetic within each vendor's own two published figures. Tidio's Growth and Plus tiers are published as 'Starts at' prices that scale with conversation volume; the floors are quoted here and no rate is inferred, because none is printed. Tidio's monthly-billed equivalents for those two tiers were not readable in the same view and are likewise not inferred. Help Scout's plan names were confirmed from the plan block rather than from the 'Popular' badge. Tidio returned euros and Help Scout returned dollars from the same connection; both localise by visitor and no conversion has been applied, so the cross-vendor price comparison is directional while the per-vendor arithmetic is exact. We hold no affiliate relationship with either company and no tracking link appears on this page. The method →
