Is that 83% off actually a discount?
A discount badge is a claim about time. SiteGround tells a reader in Germany “SAVE 83%”, and what that says is that there is a standing price and that today, exceptionally, you are being let off it. We read these pricing pages on dated days and keep what we read, so the claim can be checked: if the discounted figure has been on the page every single time we have looked, the badge is not describing a discount. It is describing the price, with decoration.
What is counted. 117 discount badges across 48 vendor
pages, from 196 dated reads taken between 28 Aug and
31 Aug 2026 in five markets. Two different things are
counted, and they are never mixed. The badge can only be seen by a read that captured the
text around the prices, so its persistence is counted over those reads alone — a read that
recorded prices without their labels could not have seen the badge, and its silence is not
evidence the badge had gone. The discounted price is visible to every read that captured a
ladder, so it is counted separately and usually runs longer. Where a discount is permanent, that
second count is what shows it.
“Not in a read” is not “not on the page”. Where a figure is missing from one of our captures we print the day and stop there. It may have gone from the page; our capture may simply not have rendered it. We cannot tell the two apart from here, so we do not write the conclusion — and reads that reached a page but captured no ladder at all are counted as neither present nor absent.

How to read this, and what it cannot tell you. Our reading of these
