These two are not quoted in the same currency. ChatGPT is priced in GBP and Claude in USD, as each page showed it to us. Figures below are what each vendor charges, not a conversion — ranking them against each other depends on the rate your bank applies, and paying in a foreign currency usually adds a fee on top.

What the record says
Set the two ladders beside each other and the first thing to fix is the vocabulary. ChatGPT runs free, then £7, then £20, then £89. Claude runs free, then $17, then $100. Both use the word Pro, and they use it for different things: on ChatGPT it names the top of the ladder, on Claude the middle of it. The plans that actually correspond are ChatGPT Plus against Claude Pro at the working tier, and ChatGPT Pro against Claude Max at the heavy tier.
At the working tier the answer is straightforward and it does not change as you cross a border: Claude asks $17 where ChatGPT asks £20. At the heavy tier the two are close enough that the difference is not the reason to choose either — £89 against $100. And ChatGPT has a rung underneath, at £7, that Claude does not answer at all; if the cheapest paid seat is what you are shopping for, one vendor has an entry the other has left empty.
The part worth slowing down for is what happens to the currency. We read both vendors from five countries in turn. ChatGPT quoted the local money every time: dollars to the United States, pounds to Britain, euros to Germany, France and Spain. Claude quoted the local money to three of the five — dollars in the United States, pounds in Britain, euros in Germany — and then quoted **dollars** to France and to Spain.
That is not a rounding difference or a display quirk, and it is why this page does not print a single subtraction for French and Spanish readers. Putting £20 beside Claude's dollar figure and calling the gap a number would be applying an exchange rate on the reader's behalf and presenting the result as a price. The tool that builds this page refuses to do it: asked for the difference in those two markets, it stops rather than convert. A German reader gets a real subtraction because both sides are in euros. A French reader, buying from the same continent in the same currency, does not — because one of the two vendors did not switch.
So the practical reading depends on where you are. In the United States, Britain and Germany these two are directly comparable and Claude's working tier is the cheaper one. In France and Spain the comparison is real but the arithmetic is not: you are choosing between a euro price and a dollar price, and the dollar price will arrive on your statement having passed through your card issuer's rate on the day, which is a number neither vendor published and we did not invent.
Beyond the price tag
The tier names do not line up

Is Claude Pro the same kind of plan as ChatGPT Pro?
No, and this is the most common mistake with these two. Claude Pro is $17 and sits in the middle of Claude's ladder. ChatGPT Pro is £89 and sits at the top of ChatGPT's. Comparing them by name compares a mid tier against a flagship. The like-for-like pairs are ChatGPT Plus with Claude Pro, and ChatGPT Pro with Claude Max.
Why does this page not tell me the difference in euros if I am in France?
Because the two vendors did not quote France the same currency. ChatGPT showed euros; Claude showed dollars. Printing a difference would mean converting one of them at a rate neither vendor published, on a date we would have had to choose, and presenting the result as if it were a price. German readers do get the subtraction, because both vendors quoted Germany in euros.
Does either give a discount for paying annually?
Not in anything we read. Neither vendor published an annual-billing rate to any of the five markets, so the yearly figures here are simply twelve months of the monthly price. If you see an annual discount offered at checkout that is not on the public pricing page, it is not something this record can confirm.
THE VERDICT, ONE MORE TIME
On the tier most people actually buy, Claude is the cheaper of the two: $17 against ChatGPT's £20 for the equivalent seat.
The two vendors' mid tiers do the same job and Claude's is the lower number in every market we hold a read for. But the word on the label is doing real damage here: ChatGPT's Pro is the £89 tier at the top of its ladder, and Claude's Pro is the $17 tier in the middle of its. A reader comparing 'Pro to Pro' is comparing the most expensive plan one vendor sells against a mid-tier plan from the other.
