Ahrefs vs Semrush: opposite billing toggles reverse which looks cheaper
OUR PICK
Our pick: Ahrefs — cheaper at the entry tier whichever way you pay, $129 against $139.95 monthly and $1,290 against $1,407.96 a year, with 50% more tracked keywords.
Read on 2026-08-27 with both billing switches clicked in each direction. Ahrefs Lite is $129 a month or $1,290 a year; Semrush's entry SEO plan is $139.95 a month or $1,407.96 a year. Ahrefs is cheaper by $10.95 monthly and $117.96 annually. It also carries 750 tracked keywords against Semrush's 500, and five tracked AI prompts on a plan Semrush badges as SEO-only — Semrush's cheapest plan carrying AI features is Starter at $199, which is $70 a month above Ahrefs Lite.
The other way: Pick Semrush if the AI-visibility layer is the point rather than a line item. Its ladder is built around it: Starter carries 50 prompts tracked daily, 300 AI visibility reports a day, AI sentiment monitoring and an AI-ready site audit, which is a different order of depth from Ahrefs' five tracked prompts. Semrush also publishes a free tier on its pricing page and Ahrefs publishes none, and it sells a Lead Generation add-on at $90 a month that has no Ahrefs equivalent. If you want to test before paying anything, only one of these two lets you.

Flipping it replaces every monthly figure with a yearly one. The discount is exactly two months free on all four plans: $129 a month becomes $1,290 a year rather than $1,548, which is 16.7% and rounds to the '17%' on the label. Seat pricing changes with it too, from a per-month to a per-year figure. Read in a browser on 2026-08-27 with the switch clicked in both directions.

Source: https://www.semrush.com/prices/ · read 2026-08-27 (UTC) · Semrush has repackaged. The Pro / Guru / Business ladder that most comparisons still quote is gone from this page; the four plans are now SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced. The entry plan is badged 'SEO' while the other three are badged 'SEO + AI Search'. The Monthly / Annually switch opens on Annually, so the first figures a visitor sees are the discounted per-month equivalents with 'billed annually' underneath — the opposite default to Ahrefs. Clicking Monthly replaces them with the true monthly rates. Read in a browser on 2026-08-27 in both switch positions.
What the record says
The first thing to know about comparing these two is that neither page shows you a monthly price and an annual price at the same time, and they disagree about which one to show first. Ahrefs loads with 'Pay annually, save up to 17%' switched off, so the $129, $249 and $449 on the plan cards are monthly-billed rates. Semrush loads with its Monthly / Annually switch already on Annually, so the $117.33, $165.17, $248.17 and $455.67 on its cards are discounted per-month equivalents with 'billed annually' printed underneath. A reader who opens both tabs and compares the big numbers is comparing an undiscounted price against a discounted one.
Correct for that and the answer changes direction. At monthly billing it is Ahrefs Lite at $129 against Semrush SEO at $139.95, so Ahrefs is $10.95 cheaper. At annual billing it is $107.50 against $117.33 per month, so Ahrefs is $9.83 cheaper. Ahrefs is the cheaper entry point in both modes, which is the opposite of what the untouched pages suggest — and the gap between what the pages imply and what they mean is about $23 a month at the entry tier.
The second thing to know is that Semrush has repackaged, and most comparisons have not caught up. The Pro, Guru and Business ladder that has been quoted for years does not appear on this page. The four plans are now SEO at $139.95, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549. The renaming carries a message: only the cheapest plan is badged 'SEO', and the three above it are badged 'SEO + AI Search'. Semrush has rebuilt its price ladder around AI visibility and put the dividing line immediately above its entry plan.
Ahrefs made the same bet differently. Tracked AI prompts are now a plan limit on its cards next to the traditional allowances — 5 on Lite, 10 on Standard, 20 on Advanced — rather than a tier you upgrade into. So the entry comparison depends on what you want. If you only want classic SEO work, it is $129 against $139.95 and Ahrefs wins on price. If you want any AI-visibility tracking at all, it is Ahrefs Lite at $129 against Semrush Starter at $199, and the gap widens to $70 a month. If you want AI visibility in depth, Semrush's 50 daily prompts and 300 daily reports are a different product from five tracked prompts, and the $70 buys something real.
The allowances tell the same story as the prices at the bottom of each ladder. Ahrefs Lite gives 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, six months of historical data and 100,000 crawl credits. Semrush SEO gives 5 websites to monitor and 500 keywords tracked daily. Level on sites, 50% ahead on keywords for Ahrefs. One tier up the distance grows: Ahrefs Standard carries 20 projects and 2,000 tracked keywords for $249, while Semrush Starter still carries 5 websites and 500 keywords for $199. You reach 15 monitored websites on Semrush at Pro+, which is $299.
The annual discounts look identical and are not. Both pages advertise 'save up to 17%'. Ahrefs means exactly two months free, on every plan without exception: $1,290, $2,490, $4,490 and $14,990 against monthly totals of $1,548, $2,988, $5,388 and $17,988 — 16.67% each time. Semrush means a flat 17% on Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, and slightly less on the entry plan, where $139.95 monthly against $1,407.96 annually works out at 16.16%. The difference is small in money and useful in what it tells you: one is a rule, the other is a rate.
At the top of the table Ahrefs does something unusual. Enterprise is priced in public at $1,499 a month, or $14,990 a year, sitting in the same row of cards as the other three rather than behind a contact-sales form. Semrush's top published plan is Advanced at $549, with 'try custom plan' offered beside it — the conventional arrangement. If you are budgeting at that end, one of these two lets you do the arithmetic without booking a call.
Neither headline price is the whole bill. Ahrefs includes exactly one user on every plan and meters the rest, at $40, $60 and $80 per user per month on Lite, Standard and Advanced, so a three-person team on Standard is $369 a month rather than $249. It also bills Site Audit overage separately at $0.020, $0.015 and $0.010 per check, charged monthly whichever billing period you chose. Semrush sells Lead Generation at $90 a month, a Base Report at $10 and a Pro Report at $20, all on top.
Beyond the price tag
The switch positions, and why they matter
Ahrefs loads with annual billing OFF and shows monthly rates; Semrush loads with it ON and shows discounted per-month equivalents. Untouched, the pages read $129 against $117.33 and imply Semrush is cheaper. Matched to the same billing mode it is $129 against $139.95 monthly, and $107.50 against $117.33 annually — Ahrefs cheaper both ways.
Semrush's plan names have changed
Pro, Guru and Business are not on the page. The ladder is SEO at $139.95, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549. Only the entry plan is badged 'SEO'; the three above it are badged 'SEO + AI Search', which puts the AI dividing line directly above the cheapest plan. Ahrefs instead meters AI prompts on every tier, 5 to 20.
Two different meanings of 'save up to 17%'
Ahrefs gives exactly two months free on all four plans — $1,290, $2,490, $4,490, $14,990 — which is 16.67% every time. Semrush gives a flat 17% on Starter, Pro+ and Advanced and 16.16% on the entry plan. Ahrefs also publishes an Enterprise price of $1,499 a month rather than hiding it behind a sales form.
Questions people actually search
Which is actually cheaper, Ahrefs or Semrush?
Ahrefs, at the entry tier, in both billing modes. Monthly it is $129 against $139.95. Annually it is $1,290 against $1,407.96, or $107.50 against $117.33 per month. The reason people report the opposite is that the two pricing pages open on opposite billing toggles, so an untouched side-by-side compares an Ahrefs monthly price against a Semrush annual one.
What happened to Semrush Pro, Guru and Business?
They are not on the pricing page as of 2026-08-27. The ladder is now SEO at $139.95 a month, Starter at $199, Pro+ at $299 and Advanced at $549. Any comparison still quoting Guru or Business is describing a page that has been replaced, which is worth checking before you rely on its numbers.
Do both include AI search tracking at the entry price?
No, and this is the sharpest difference between them. Ahrefs meters tracked AI prompts on every plan, starting at 5 on Lite. Semrush's cheapest plan is badged 'SEO' rather than 'SEO + AI Search', and its first AI-badged plan is Starter at $199. So the cheapest AI-capable plan is $129 on Ahrefs and $199 on Semrush — though Semrush's Starter carries 50 prompts tracked daily and 300 AI visibility reports a day, which is far more than five.
Is the annual discount the same on both?
Both say 'save up to 17%' and they mean different things. Ahrefs gives exactly two months free on all four plans, which is 16.67%. Semrush gives a flat 17% on Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, and 16.16% on the entry SEO plan. In money the difference is minor; as a rule it means Ahrefs' annual price is always twelve months minus two, and Semrush's is a percentage off.
Can I try either one free?
Semrush publishes a free tier on its pricing page and offers 'Try for free' on its first three plans. Ahrefs publishes no free plan on its pricing page at all — every one of its four tiers starts at a paid rate. If trying before paying matters, that is a decision made for you.
THE VERDICT, ONE MORE TIME
Our pick: Ahrefs — cheaper at the entry tier whichever way you pay, $129 against $139.95 monthly and $1,290 against $1,407.96 a year, with 50% more tracked keywords.
Every figure above was read from each vendor's own pricing page in a browser on 2026-08-27, with each billing switch clicked in both directions rather than accepting whichever state the page opened in. Semrush publishes per-month equivalents rather than annual totals, so its yearly figures here are twelve times its published monthly number and are arithmetic rather than quotations. Semrush's own strikethrough on the entry plan reads 'instead of $139 monthly' while its Monthly switch shows $139.95; both are reported as read rather than reconciled. Ahrefs prices are localised — an automated fetch from a German address on the same day returned the page in euros, so a reader outside the US may see different figures. We hold no affiliate relationship with either company: Ahrefs runs no affiliate programme and Semrush declined our application on 2026-08-27. The method →
