AWeber vs Constant Contact: one ladder is the same everywhere, the other changes shape at the border

How to read this page: every number below was read from the vendor’s own public pricing page on the date shown, and the pages are re-checked daily. Currencies differ because that is what each vendor showed an EU visitor. Some links on this page are affiliate links — if you subscribe through one we earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Per our method, that never changes a number or a verdict. Source links always point to the vendor’s plain page.

What the record says

AWeber's pricing page gave us the same three figures from every country we asked from: $12.49, $19.99 and $20, in dollars, in the United States, Britain, Germany, France and Spain. Whatever else is true of that ladder, it does not move. Constant Contact's does — and not only in the obvious way of quoting pounds to a British reader and euros to a German one.

The interesting part is the spacing. In the United States, Constant Contact's first step is $19 and its second is $39 — the second about twice the first. In the euro markets the pattern is the same: €18 then €35, again roughly double.

Britain is not that ladder. There the first step is £11 and the second is £58 — more than five times the first, where everywhere else it is about two. The three plans have the same names in every market, and in Britain the top one sits much further away from the other two than it does anywhere else we read.

That matters because a ladder's shape is advice. A middle rung priced near the bottom one reads as the default; a middle rung priced near the top reads as a stretch. A British reader and an American reader looking at the same three plan names are being given different advice by the spacing, and neither page says so.

Against that, AWeber's problem is the opposite and simpler. Its top two rungs are $0.01 apart per month, which is not a step at all. So one vendor gives you three rungs whose meaning shifts by country, and the other gives you three rungs of which two are effectively the same price everywhere.

Beyond the price tag

AWeber does not move

$12.49, $19.99 and $20, in dollars, returned identically from all five countries we read. A British or German buyer sees the American figures and pays whatever their card issuer's conversion adds.

Constant Contact's American and European spacing

United States: $19 then $39. Euro markets: €18 then €35. In both, the second step is about twice the first.

And its British spacing, which is not the same shape

£11 then £58 — the second step more than five times the first. Same three plan names, a different distribution of the money.

AWeber's two top rungs

$19.99 and $20 are $0.01 apart, with the dearer one named Done. Whatever separates them, the pricing page does not price it.

What we did not read

Contact ceilings, send volumes, and what each plan includes — including whether Constant Contact's British top plan carries something the others do not, which would explain the spacing and which its pricing page does not tell us.

Questions people actually search

Does Constant Contact charge different prices in different countries?

Yes, and it also spaces them differently. Its second step is $39 in the United States and £58 in Britain, against first steps of $19 and £11. The British top plan is further from the middle one than the American top plan is from its middle one.

Does AWeber charge in pounds or euros?

Not in our readings. We fetched its pricing page from Britain, Germany, France and Spain and it returned the same dollar figures each time: $12.49, $19.99 and $20.

Which is cheaper?

In the United States both quote dollars, so the entry rungs can be set side by side directly. Elsewhere AWeber is in dollars and Constant Contact is in local currency, and a difference between different currencies is an exchange rate rather than a price, so we do not publish one.

Why would the same three plans be spaced differently by country?

The pricing pages do not say, and we do not guess. What we can show is that they are: the ratio between Constant Contact's two steps is about two to one in the United States and the euro markets, and much wider in Britain. If the British top plan includes something the others do not, that would explain it, and it is not on the page we read.

THE VERDICT, ONE MORE TIME

Its entry plan is quoted in your own currency and its ladder is graded where AWeber's is not — but check which market's shape you are being shown before you pick the middle rung.

AWeber's top two plans are $0.01 apart, so its ladder has effectively two useful rungs rather than three. Constant Contact publishes three distinct steps in every market we read, and prices them in the reader's own money in four of the five.

Both ladders were read from the vendors' own pricing pages, from five countries in turn, each table dated. AWeber returned US dollars from all five. Constant Contact returned the local currency in four. Every difference on this page is computed inside a single market's currency and pinned to that market, so nothing here is a conversion; where two markets are set beside each other it is their shape being compared and not their amounts.
